Finding Time for Mama
Embracing Self-Care in the Chaos of Parenthood
In the beautiful whirlwind of motherhood, it’s all too easy for mothers to put themselves last on the priority list. Between juggling work, school runs, activities, and household tasks, finding time for self-care often feels like a distant luxury rather than an attainable reality. Yet, nurturing yourself is essential—not only for your well-being but for the health of your entire family. Here’s how you can find time for “Mama Self” and embrace the importance of self-care.
1. Understanding the Importance of Self-Care
Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s a vital component of maintaining your physical, emotional, and mental health. By taking care of yourself, you recharge your batteries, enabling you to be more present, patient, and happy as a parent. A well-rested and fulfilled mama is better equipped to handle the challenges of motherhood. Prioritizing self-care can lead to improved mood, reduced stress, and a greater sense of balance in your hectic life.
2. Plan Ahead: Schedule “Me Time”
Just like any other commitment, self-care needs to be scheduled. Carve out time each week for activities that nourish your spirit. Whether it’s a long bubble bath, reading with a cup of tea, or hitting the gym, block off time in your calendar as you would for a doctor’s appointment. Communicate your plans to your family, so they understand your need for some personal time. This not only sets boundaries but also encourages them to respect and support your need for self-care. For me, my “me time” is arriving at my children’s school 15 minutes to have some alone time. Sometimes, I watch TikTok videos, listen to music, or just think; whatever it is, it’s my 15 minutes to just breathe.
3. Rethink “Me Time”
Finding time for self-care doesn’t always mean you need to devote hours to yourself. Sometimes, it’s the little moments that make all the difference. Aim for small pockets of “me time” throughout your day, such as:
- Morning Moments: Wake up 10-15 minutes earlier than the rest of the household. Use this quiet time to meditate, stretch, or sip your coffee peacefully.
- Mindful Minutes: Take a few moments to breathe deeply or practice mindfulness during the day. This could be while waiting in the car for a pickup or even during a bathroom break.
- Power Naps: If your little ones still nap, consider grabbing a quick nap yourself, even if it’s just 20 minutes. It can work wonders for your energy levels. I wish I would remember to do this. When I bartended, was teaching school, running a business, and sometimes all three at once, I would sit in my car for 15-20 minutes and close my eyes. Thats it. Most of the time I didn’t fall asleep but closing my eyes and muting my phone for that amount of time rejuvenated me for hours.
4. Incorporate Family Time into Self-Care
Self-care doesn’t have to be a solitary affair. Explore ways to incorporate your family into your self-care routines. Go for a walk together, practice yoga as a family, or even cook a healthy meal together. This not only allows you to spend cherished time together but also sets an example for your children about the importance of taking care of oneself.
5. Get Creative with Self-Care
Self-care looks different for everyone, so customize it to fit your needs. Here are some creative ideas to consider:
- Journaling: Take the time to reflect on your day, your feelings, and your dreams. Journaling can be a powerful tool for self-discovery and mental clarity.
- Artistic Expression: Engaging in art, whether it’s painting, doodling, or crafting, can be a therapeutic form of self-care. Get messy and let your creativity flow!
- Gardening: Spending time outdoors and nurturing plants can be incredibly fulfilling. Create a small garden or care for houseplants as a way to unwind and connect with nature.
- Solo Adventures: Whether it’s visiting a local café, exploring a bookstore, or taking a day trip, give yourself permission to enjoy experiencing the world on your own.
6. Communicate with Your Partner
Open communication with your partner about your self-care needs is key. Discuss the importance of taking care of one another and share responsibilities in a way that allows both of you to pursue individual interests. Consider setting up a system where each partner supports the other in having their own time—whether scheduling date nights or taking care of the kids during a personal outing.
